Subproject B.3

Mesoscopic Many Body Simulation of Fracture and Fractured Inhomogeneous Materials with Granular Microstructure

During the first project phase emphasis was placed upon failure of granular assemblies, while during the second phase fracture formation in solids with granular microstructure is studied.

For experimentally realistic laboratory samples with pore sizes ranging from nanometers to millimeters simulations of systems with 10 to 100 million grains or particles (N ≈ 107 - 108) are necessary.
